14.41

蘇州寶華妙覺願禪師。僧問。機輪曾未轉轉處實能幽。如何是轉處實能幽。師曰。白雲遶空谷清風拂太虛。云意旨如何。師曰。劫火洞然毫末盡。青山依舊白雲中。問如何是祖師西來意。師曰。霜風零落葉。云意旨如何。師曰。逢春又却生。問久雨不晴時如何。師曰。綠毛龜出水。云晴後如何。師曰。得縮頭時且縮頭。師顧視大眾曰。日如箭月如梭。靈源本來瑩淨。何須特地揩磨。如今要得無餘事。學取城東黑老婆參。

Chan Master Miaojue Yuan of Baohua in Suzhou. A monk asked, "Before the wheel of potential has ever turned, the turning place is truly profound. What is the turning place that is truly profound?" The Master said, "White clouds encircle the empty valley; pure wind brushes the great void." [The monk] said, "What is the meaning?" The Master said, "The kalpa fire blazes through, consuming the finest hair; the green mountains remain as before amidst the white clouds." [The monk] asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "Frosty wind scatters the fallen leaves." [The monk] said, "What is the meaning?" The Master said, "Meeting spring, they grow again." [The monk] asked, "How is it when it rains for a long time without clearing?" The Master said, "The green-haired turtle emerges from the water." [The monk] said, "How is it after it clears?" The Master said, "When you can pull your head in, just pull your head in." The Master looked at the assembly and said, "The sun is like an arrow; the moon is like a shuttle. The numinous source is originally lustrous and pure; why make a special effort to scrub and polish it? Today, if you wish to have nothing left to do, learn from the old black woman east of the city. Investigate!"
