Chan Master Shanke of Chenghui in Luzhou. A monk asked, "What is the environment of Chenghui?" The Master said, "A thousand miles of pure wind returns to the wilds; a disc of bright moon rises above the ripples." [The monk] said, "What is the person within the environment?" The Master said, "Carrying a staff across the shoulder, eyes gazing at the layered clouds." [The monk] said, "What is the matter of transcendence?" The Master said, "Is that not getting entangled in vines?" He instructed the assembly, saying, "If we discuss this matter, it soars above the three realms and walks alone through the chiliocosm. It cuts off the flow of birth and death, and perches on the shore of nirvāṇa. Expounding the unsurpassed Dharma, it causes numinous sprouts and extraordinary herbs to send forth fragrance everywhere, and luan-phoenixes and qilin to echo each other cry for cry. This may indeed be called offering this deep mind to the dust-like lands, which is named repaying the Buddha's kindness. Venerable monks, to present it like this still cannot avoid being circuitous. If you are an exceptional follower of the Way, tell me: when shall we meet again? Investigate!"
