14.44

蘇州寶華悟本慶禪師。僧問。久居岩谷即不問。入𮠔垂手事如何。師曰。弄花香滿手穿竹粉盈衣。云便是為人處也無。師曰。兩眼已隨青。嶂合雙眉猶帶野花顰。僧出眾提起坐具。師便喝。僧亦喝。師又喝。僧禮拜。師便打。問休去歇去古廟香爐去意旨如何。師曰。有耳鐵牛穿半夜。無絛石馬走春風。云莫便是為人處也無。師曰。風激浪高魚自隱。金鱗透入碧波中。師顧視曰。看看桃花亂落如紅雨。風撼梨花白雪香。鶯轉玉琴細。柳垂金線長。古佛家風在。頭頭示顯揚。恁麼說話也是事隨物轉法逐時遷。若是格外上根。不干文墨直見自心。大用繁興無非佛事。良久曰。參。

Chan Master Wuben Qing of Baohua in Suzhou. A monk asked, "I do not ask about dwelling long in the crags and valleys; how is it when entering the marketplace with hands hanging down?" The Master said, "Playing with flowers, fragrance fills the hands; walking through bamboos, pollen covers the robe." [The monk] said, "Is this then the way of helping people?" The Master said, "Both eyes have closed along with the green peaks; both eyebrows still bear the knit of wild flowers." A monk stepped forward from the assembly and held up his sitting mat. The Master then shouted. The monk also shouted. The Master shouted again. The monk bowed. The Master then hit him. [A monk] asked, "'Resting and ceasing, like an incense burner in an ancient temple'—what is the meaning of this?" The Master said, "The iron ox with ears is pierced through at midnight; the stone horse without reins gallops in the spring wind." [The monk] said, "Is this not then the way of helping people?" The Master said, "When the wind rouses high waves, the fish naturally conceals itself; the golden-scaled one penetrates into the blue waves." The Master looked around and said, "Look, look! Peach blossoms fall scattered like red rain; the wind shakes pear blossoms into fragrant white snow. Orioles warble like delicate jade zithers; willows hang long golden threads. The ancient Buddhas' house style remains; every single thing manifests and proclaims it. Talking like this is also a matter of things turning with objects, and dharmas shifting with time. If one is of extraordinary superior capacity, not concerning oneself with texts and writings, one directly sees one's own mind. Great function extensively arises, and nothing is not a Buddha work." After a long pause, he said, "Investigate!"
