Chan Master Yingquan of Daguishan in Tanzhou. A monk asked, 'How is it when the ancient mirror is not yet polished?' The Master said, 'Pitch black and vast.' The monk said, 'How is it after it is polished?' The Master said, 'It blazes through the crown of the head.' He also asked, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' The Master said, 'Boarding a ship at Guangzhou.' The monk said, 'What is the intention?' The Master said, 'Gazing at the wall at Shaolin.' The monk said, 'The student does not understand.' The Master said, 'Returning to Western India.' Ascending the hall, he said, 'The mountain is high and the water is cold; travelers seldom arrive. Below the slope where cows are herded, Chan guests wander back and forth. Going out and coming in, do not let them fall into the weeds. Does speaking like this still have the principle of the Buddha Dharma or not?' After a long pause, he said, 'Yet I recall that Yangshan once had a saying: "Each time entering the weeds, each time pulling back." Hūṃ!'
