Chan Master Faming of Mount Jiuyanshan in Anzhou. Ascending the hall, a monk asked, 'Having ascended the precious seat on this day, please utter a sentence, Master, that reveals what is fresh and sharp.' The Master said, 'Within the words there is an echo.' The monk said, 'The marsh crane cries connecting to heaven; / The golden crow circles the tree in flight.' The Master said, 'Recognize the huatou.' He also asked, 'How is it when one arrives at the jewel mountain and returns empty-handed?' The Master said, 'One who expends effort loses out.' The monk said, 'Exhausting one's intent on the road, ashamed and humiliated, one turns and returns.' The Master said, 'Be strictly careful not to speak of it.' He instructed the assembly, saying, 'The mind is fundamentally free of dust; sentient beings obscure it themselves. It is just like the clear ocean when waves arise and wind is generated; it is also like the pure empty expanse when clouds gather and rain is made. Good people, before the wind has risen and the clouds have gathered, Hanshan and Shide celebrate great peace. The pines on the ridges of Mount Jiuyan are high and verdant; the flowing water in front of the temple has been pure from past to present. A patch-robed monk with clear eyes must be meticulous.' Then he smiled and said, 'You have been standing a long time; take care.'
