Chan Master Tanxiu of Lianquan. A monk asked, 'How is it when with a mouth full one cannot speak?' The Master said, 'The speech has fallen into error.' He asked, 'How is it when one takes no companion among the ten thousand dharmas?' The Master said, 'One draws on one's own belly.' He asked, 'What is the student's place of turning the body?' The Master said, 'Sweeping the ground and watering the flowers.' The monk said, 'What is the student's most intimate place?' The Master said, 'Pillowing high on the pillow.' The monk said, 'How is it when it is not so at all?' The Master said, 'Orioles sing on the ridge; flowers bloom before the cliff.' He asked, 'What is the patch-robed monk's mouth?' The Master said, 'Killing someone without using a knife.'
