16.44

江陰軍壽聖子邦圓覺禪師。僧問。祖意教意且拈放一邊。如何得速成佛去。師曰。有成終不是是佛亦非真。僧擬議。師叱曰。話頭道甚麼。

Chan Master Zibang Yuanjue of Shousheng in Jiangyin Military Prefecture. A monk asked, "Setting aside for a moment the Patriarch's intent and the teachings' intent, how can one quickly accomplish Buddhahood?" The master said, "That which has accomplishment in the end is not it; if it is a Buddha, it is also not real." The monk hesitated. The master scolded him, saying, "What does your topic say?"
