19.16

越州五峯子琪禪師。僧問。學人上來乞師垂示。師曰。花開千朵秀。曰學人不會。師曰。雨後萬山青。曰謝指示。師曰。爾作麼生會。僧便喝。師曰。未在。僧又喝。師曰。一喝兩喝後作麼生。曰也知和尚有此機要。師曰。適來道甚麼。僧無語。師便喝。

Chan Master Ziqi of Wufeng in Yuezhou. A monk asked, "The student has come before you begging the Master to impart instruction." The Master said, "A thousand blossoms open in elegance." The monk said, "The student does not understand." The Master said, "After the rain, ten thousand mountains are green." The monk said, "Thank you for the instruction." The Master said, "How do you understand it?" The monk then gave a shout. The Master said, "Not yet." The monk gave another shout. The Master said, "After one shout and two shouts, what then?" The monk said, "I already knew the Upādhyāya had this pivotal function." The Master said, "What did you just say?" The monk was speechless. The Master then shouted.
