19.28

秀州鹿苑道齊禪師上堂曰。若論此事直下無私輝騰今古。不離當處應現無虧。更逞詞鋒徒勞側耳。門庭敲磕萬別千差。到這裏維摩老漢秖可傍觀。達磨九年看即有分。良久曰。參。

Chan Master Daoqi of Luyuan in Xiuzhou ascended the hall and said, "If one speaks of this matter, directly without partiality, its radiance leaps through past and present. Not departing from the present place, its responsive manifestation is never lacking. To further display the sharp edge of rhetoric is only to tire the ears of listeners. Knocking and tapping at the gate produces ten thousand distinctions and a thousand differences. Arriving here, Old Man Vimalakīrti could only look on from the side; as for Bodhidharma's nine years, watching it has its share." After a long pause, he said, "Investigate!"
