19.33

處州縉雲仙巖懷義禪師。僧問。如何是佛。師曰。自屈作麼。云如何是道。師曰。爾道了。云向上更有事也無。師曰無。僧云。恁麼則小出大遇也。師曰。秖恐不恁麼。云也是。師曰。却恁麼去也。

Chan Master Huayi of Xianyan in Jinyun, Chuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Why wrong yourself?" The monk said, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "You have already spoken it." The monk said, "Is there still anything beyond?" The Master said, "No." The monk said, "If so, then a small departure brings a great encounter." The Master said, "I only fear it is not so." The monk said, "Indeed it is." The Master said, "Yet you go off like that."
