Chan Master Huilin Yueyin of Dongjing. A monk asked: "Whose family's melody does the Master sing? Whose lineage style do you inherit?" The Master said: "Jade pavilions on ground of gold." He asked: "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said: "In the third month, the people of Luoyang wear flowers." He ascended the hall [and said]: "On the ground of gold, one who possesses the eye is not willing to abide in peace; amid the forest of briars and thorns, one who keeps to duty cannot be held back. Setting aside these two paths, what is the place of practice for a patch-robed monk?" After a long pause, he said: "Lifting the head amidst the misty haze, one vaguely sees one's native mountain." He ascended the hall, looked around at the assembly, struck the meditation bed once, and said: "Merely to indicate not being empty." He then stepped down from the seat.
