Chan Master Xinan of Luohan Monastery on Mount Lu was a native of the Zhang family of Tingzhou. Ascending the hall, he said: "Chan or not Chan, Dao or not Dao—the three-inch tongue sweeps about wildly! Last night the sun wheel fluttered with osmanthus flowers; this morning the moon cave sprouted lingzhi grass. Ha, ha! Ten thousand ounces of yellow gold cannot be found anywhere. A single phrase cuts off deliberation; the myriad phenomena do not reach one another." When the Master was about to manifest nirvāṇa, he ascended the seat and announced to the assembly: "Today Luohan rides an iron horse backward, climbing up Mount Sumeru against the current, treading into nothingness without leaving a single trace." He then returned to the abbot's quarters, sat cross-legged, and passed away.
