Chan Master Yongcheng of Nanfeng in Quanzhou instructed the assembly: "Beginning with the continuing flame of Cock's Foot Peak and the fragrance flowing from Shaoshi, the cloud of compassion was widely spread, and the sun of wisdom broadly shone. The teachings are divided into the Three Baskets, directly pointing to the single mind. Sometimes fully brought forth with stick and shout applied together; sometimes giving rein or snatching away with host and guest mutually established. Sometimes the vajra presses the sword; sometimes the lion rolls over. Sometimes illumination and function rush like thunder; sometimes sharp wits flash like lightning. None are other than pruning away falsehood and opening up the mystery, directly understanding the lineage tenets and reaching the ground of reality. Good people, only upon reaching here is a sliver of the path permitted for me to discuss with you. If not yet so, it is all fabricating interpretations by relying on teachers, completely without merit."
