Hermitage Master Huiri of Yongfeng in Xinzhou was a son of the Qiu family of this prefecture. In his childhood he left the household and was ordained at Mingxin Monastery. From the time his capacity accorded with Yunju, he traveled thoroughly through the Xiang and Han regions. When he returned to Yongfeng, he would dwell either in rocky valleys or in bustling markets, telling the villagers to call him 'Uncle Qiu.' Whenever asked anything, he would answer with: 'Don't know.' Suddenly, he said to the townspeople: "Tomorrow I am going on an itinerant pilgrimage. You may come to see me off." Thereupon, those offering farewell gifts gathered completely. The Master laughed unceasingly. When the assembly asked for the reason, he immediately wrote a verse: 'Uncle Qiu does not know, / Silent and brightly clear. / At midday, the third watch is struck; / Who can finish striking it?' He cast down the brush and passed away.
