Chan Master Wuyin Zijing of Boshan in Xinzhou ascended the hall on New Year's Day [and said]: / "Harmonious qi gives birth to dry stumps; / Cold clouds disperse over the distant suburbs. / The wooden man divines an auspicious omen; / In the middle of the night, the tortoise shell's cracks appear. / Venerable Chan practitioners! Where the tortoise shell's cracks appear, the patterns are already manifest. Then one sees that in the twelve months of a year, month after month is just so; in the twelve periods of a day, period after period is alike. Reaching here, it is directly like the yellowness of yellow gold, the whiteness of white jade—never having changed color since vast, distant kalpas. Do you still see? If not yet so, let us casually go along with Zhang Three in observing the seasonal order, and let Li Four's temples turn grizzled and gray."
