23.11

隆興府黃龍德逢通照禪師。郡之靖安胡氏子。生有厖眉。年十七從上藍普禪師落髮。往依靈源即明深旨。上堂。舉夾山境話。師曰。法眼徒有此語。殊不知夾山老漢被這僧輕輕拶著。直得脚前脚後。設使不作境話會。未免猶在半途。

Chan Master Tongzhao Defeng of Huanglong in Longxing Prefecture was a son of the Hu family of Jing'an in that prefecture. When born, he had thick eyebrows. At the age of seventeen, he shaved his head under Chan Master Pu of Shanglan. Going to rely on Lingyuan, he immediately understood the profound tenets. He ascended the hall and brought up the story of Jiashan's environment. The master said, "Fayan made this statement in vain; he scarcely knew that the old fellow Jiashan was gently pressed by that monk until he was stumbling forward and backward. Even if one does not understand it as speaking of the environment, one inevitably remains halfway on the road."
