Chan Master Dezhou of Guangxiao in Wenzhou was a son of the Qu family of Xinzhou. He was tonsured at Jingde Zunsheng Cloister and inquired into the Way for years. Later he went to Huanglong. Hearing the story of Shaolin wall-gazing brought up, he was suddenly awakened and composed two verses to present. Huanglong approved him. From then on, his renown flowed through Jiangnan and Zhejiang. He ascended the hall and said, "The entire body is exposed, grand and clear; / In the ten directions, there are no hindrances. / The thousand sages cannot transmit it; / The myriad spirits come to crown it upon their heads. / If one intends to deliberate about it together, / Opening the mouth breaks it into a hundred fragments. / Just what was it like before opening the mouth? Du!" / He ascended the hall [and said]: / "Interpenetration or non-interpenetration? / Staring to look, there is nothing to be seen. / Penetrating through the ancestral barrier, / One treads and severs the path of humans and devas. / Ha, ha, ha! Awakened or unawakened? / Falling flowers and flowing water—who knows where they are?"
