25.15

元禮首座閩人也。受業焦山。初參演和尚於白雲。凡入室必謂曰。衲僧家明取緇素好。師疑之不已。一日演陞堂。舉首山新婦騎驢阿家牽語。乃曰。諸人要會麼。莫問新婦阿家。免煩路上波吒。遇飯即飯遇茶即茶。同門出入宿世冤家。師於言下豁如。且曰。今日緇素明矣。二年演遷席祖山命分座不就。演歸寂即他往。崇寧間再到五祖。僧問。五祖遷化向甚麼處去。師曰。有眼無耳朵六月火邊坐。曰意旨如何。師曰。家貧猶自可路貧愁殺人。或問。金剛經云一切善法。如何是法。師曰。上是天下是地。中間坐底坐立底立。喚甚麼作善法。僧無對。師便打。後終於四明之瑞岩。

Head Monk Yuanli was a native of Min. He received his training at Jiaoshan. At first, he studied under Master [Wuzu Fa]yan at Baiyun. Whenever he entered the abbot's room, [Fayan] would invariably say to him, 'It is best for a patch-robed monk to clearly distinguish black from white.' The Master doubted this incessantly. One day, [Fa]yan ascended the hall, brought up Shoushan's words about 'the bride rides the donkey, the mother-in-law leads it,' and said, 'Do you all wish to understand? Do not ask about the bride or the mother-in-law, and spare yourselves the toil and trouble on the road. When encountering food, then eat; when encountering tea, then drink. Those going in and out of the same gate are sworn enemies from past lifetimes.' At these words, the Master had an open awakening, and said, 'Today black and white are clear!' Two years later, when [Fa]yan moved his seat to Zushan, he instructed him to share the seat, but he did not accept. When [Fa]yan passed away into silence, [Yuanli] went elsewhere. During the Chongning era, he came again to Wuzu. A monk asked, 'Where has Wuzu gone after passing away?' The Master said, 'Having eyes without ears, sitting by the fire in the sixth month.' [The monk] asked, 'What is the intended meaning?' The Master said, 'Poverty at home is still bearable; poverty on the road worries one to death.' Someone asked, 'The Diamond Sūtra says, "all good dharmas." What is the dharma?' The Master said, 'Above is heaven, below is earth; in between, those sitting sit, those standing stand. What do you call a good dharma?' The monk had no reply. The Master then struck him. Later he passed away at Ruiyan in Siming.
