28.44

上曰。他如何有悟。師對。曾嘗問。如何是善知識。臣云。燈籠露柱猫兒狗子。皆稱善知識何必更問。曾云。既稱善知識。為甚讚即歡喜毀即煩惱。臣云。侍郎曾見善知識否。曾云。開三十年參禪如何不見。臣云。歡喜處見。煩惱處見。曾茫然。臣震喝一聲。曾擬開口。臣又喝。復搊住云。開口底不是曾侍郎。曾侍郎向甚處去。曾不覺點頭長噓。臣舉手長揖云。侍郎且喜大事了畢。曾遂作投機頌云。咄哉老驢。叢林妖㜸。震地一聲。天機漏泄。有人更問意如何。拈起拂子劈口截。

The Emperor said, "How did he attain awakening?" The Master replied, "Zeng once asked, 'What is a kalyāṇamitra?' Your servant said, 'Lanterns, exposed pillars, cats, and dogs are all called kalyāṇamitras; why must you ask further?' Zeng said, 'Since they are called kalyāṇamitras, why is it that when praised they rejoice, and when reviled they become afflicted?' Your servant said, 'Has the Vice Minister ever seen a kalyāṇamitra?' Zeng said, 'I, Kai, have investigated Chan for thirty years; how could I not have seen one?' Your servant said, 'Do you see it at the place of rejoicing, or do you see it at the place of affliction?' Zeng was bewildered. Your servant gave a thundering shout. Zeng was about to open his mouth, and your servant shouted again, grabbed him, and said, 'The one who opens his mouth is not Vice Minister Zeng! Where has Vice Minister Zeng gone?' Zeng unconsciously nodded and sighed deeply. Your servant raised his hands, made a deep bow, and said, 'The Vice Minister should rejoice that the great matter is finished!' Zeng then composed a verse on matching realization: / 'Bah, old donkey! / Monster of the monasteries! / With a single earth-shaking shout, / heaven's secret was leaked. / If anyone asks further what the meaning is, / I will hold up the whisk and hit them across the mouth.'"
