6.30

越州天衣在和禪師。僧問。祖祖相傳傳祖印。師今得法嗣何人。師曰。人將語試水將杖探。僧云。廓周沙界。師曰。一夜梅開盡。百花猶未知。

Chan Master Tianyi Zaihe of Yuezhou. A monk asked, "Patriarch after patriarch transmitted each other's patriarchal seal. Now whose Dharma heir are you, Master?" The Master said, "A man tests with words; water is sounded with a staff." The monk said, "Extensively pervading worlds as numerous as sand grains." The Master said, "In one night all the plum blossoms opened, / Yet the myriad flowers do not yet know."
