8.23

秀州崇德智澄禪師上堂。覿面相呈更無餘事。若也如此豈不俊哉。山僧蓋不得已曲為諸人。若向衲僧面前一點也著不得。諸禪德。且道衲僧面前說箇甚麼即得。良久曰。深秋簾幕千家雨。浴日樓臺一笛風。

Chan Master Zhìchéng of Chóngdé in Xiùzhōu ascended the hall: "Meeting face-to-face, there is nothing else remaining. If it were so, wouldn't that be splendid? The mountain monk only does so out of necessity, accommodating you people with twists and turns. If brought before a patch-robed monk, not a single speck could be applied. Venerable Chan monks, tell me, what can be spoken before a patch-robed monk?" After a pause, he said, "In deep autumn, behind the blinds, a thousand homes in rain; on the sun-bathed terrace, the wind of a single flute."
