8.34

天台太平元坦禪師上堂。是法無宗隨緣建立。聲色動靜不昧見聞。舉用千差如鍾待扣。於此薦得。且隨時著衣喫飯。若是德山臨濟。更須打草鞋行脚。參。

Chan Master Yuantan of Taiping in Tiantai ascended the hall: "This Dharma has no fixed principle; it is established according to conditions. Sounds, forms, motion, and stillness do not obscure seeing and hearing. Bringing it forth and applying it in a thousand various ways, it is like a bell awaiting the strike. If you comprehend it here, then just wear your clothes and eat your meals according to the time. If it were Deshan or Linji, they would still need to weave straw sandals and go on itinerant pilgrimage. Engage!"
