8.35

臨安府佛日文祖禪師。僧問。峭峻之機請師垂示。師曰。十字街頭八字立。曰秖如大洋海底行船。須彌山上走馬又作麼生。師曰。烏龜向火曰恁麼則。能騎虎頭。善把虎尾。師以拄杖點一下。曰禮拜著。

Chan Master Wenzu of Fori in Lin'an Prefecture. A monk asked, "Please, Master, impart a teaching on the sheer and precipitous turning point." The Master said, "Standing figure-eight-legged at the crossroads." [The monk] said, "What about sailing a boat on the ocean floor or galloping a horse atop Mount Sumeru?" The Master said, "A mud turtle facing the fire." [The monk] said, "If so, one can ride the tiger's head and deftly grasp the tiger's tail." The Master tapped him once with his staff and said, "Make your prostrations!"
