Chan Master Zong of Mount Wangxian in Yizhou. A monk asked, "Leaving aside the four seasons and eight solar terms, what is the matter of the ordinary phrase?" The Master said, "Heshan beating the drum." [The monk] said, "Could that be where the student should apply effort?" The Master said, "Guizong hauling stone." The monk was speechless. The Master said, "A true patch-robed monk!" Ascending the hall, [the Master said,] "Black-medicine root from Nantai, gastrodia from the northern sea, aconite from Silla, and cinnabar from Chenjin." After a long pause, he said, "Does the great assembly understand? You have been standing for a long time." Ascending the hall, [he said,] "Are you all willing to put it down? If you will not put it down, then shoulder it and be off!" He then descended from the seat.
