9.29

潤州金山懷賢圓通禪師。僧問。師揚宗旨得法何人。師拈起拂子。僧曰。鐵甕城頭曾印證。碧溪崖畔祖燈輝。師拂一拂曰。聽事不真喚鍾作甕。

Chan Master Huaixian Yuantong of Jinshan in Runzhou. A monk asked, "From whom did the master receive the Dharma to propagate the lineage tenets?" The master held up his whisk. The monk said, "At the top of the Iron Urn City wall it was once verified; beside the Blue Stream cliff, the lamp of the patriarchs shines brightly." The master gave a flick of his whisk and said, "Hearing things inaccurately, one calls a bell an urn."
