Chan Master Xianzhong Zuyin of Shifo Temple in Yuezhou. A monk asked, "Who is the Immovable Honoured One?" The master said, "A monkey on a hot griddle." [The monk] said, "What are the hundreds of millions of transformation bodies?" The master said, "Adding incense, changing water, lighting lamps, and sweeping the ground." [The monk] said, "Who is the master of Vairocana's Dharma body?" The master said, "The post for tying horses." [The monk] said, "What connection is there?" The master said, "Tie this fellow to death!" [A monk] asked, "Only one who can kill Buddhas and patriarchs is an adept. What is the sword that kills Buddhas and patriarchs?" The master said, "It does not decapitate dead fellows." [The monk] said, "What is the Upādhyāya's sword?" The master said, "The order is not executed twice." [A monk] asked, "What is arising from marks?" The master said, "Mountains, rivers, and the great earth." [The monk] said, "What is arising from thought?" The master said, "A rabbit gazing at the moon." [The monk] said, "What is arising from continuous flux?" The master said, "Without interruption." [The monk] said, "What are form and emptiness?" The master said, "A five-colored screen." Ascending the hall, [the master said], "Du, du, du! The fish and dragons at the bottom of the sea are completely dried up. The three-legged toad flies up to heaven; the shell-shedding tortoise stays alive amidst the fire." Ascending the hall, [the master said], "When pointing, one does not arrive, and black and white are not yet distinguished. When arriving, one does not point, mixing mud and blending water. The exposed pillar leaps into the lantern—let that be as it may! Why are your eyebrows dragged beneath your heels instead? Even if you understand clearly here, you are still a monkey wearing a rush hat; if you do not understand clearly here, how is it different from an earthworm wearing boots? Although this is so, those who laugh at me are many; those who sneer at me are few."
