9.31

杭州淨住院居說真淨禪師。參達觀遂問曰。某甲經論粗明禪直不信。願師決疑。觀曰。既不信禪豈可明經。禪是經綱經是禪綱。提綱正網了禪見經。師曰。為某甲說禪看。觀曰。向下文長。師曰。若恁麼經與禪乃一體。觀曰。佛及祖非二心。如手搦拳如拳搦手。師因而有省。乃成偈曰。二十餘年用意猜。幾番曾把此心灰。而今潦𪶌逢知己。李白元來是秀才。

Chan Master Jushuo Zhenjing of Jingzhu Cloister in Hangzhou. He visited Daguan and asked, "I roughly understand the sūtras and treatises, but simply have no faith in Chan. I pray that the master will resolve my doubts." Guan said, "Since you do not believe in Chan, how can you understand the sūtras? Chan is the guiding rope of the sūtras; the sūtras are the guiding rope of Chan. Pulling the main cord aligns the net; understanding Chan, one sees the sūtras." The master said, "Speak some Chan for me to see." Guan said, "The text that follows is lengthy." The master said, "If so, then the sūtras and Chan are a single entity." Guan said, "Buddhas and patriarchs are not two minds. It is like the hand grasping into a fist, like a fist opening into a hand." The master was awakened as a result, and composed a gāthā: / 'For more than twenty years I used my mind to guess, / Several times having turned this heart to cold ashes. / Now, in distress, I meet an intimate friend— / Li Bai, after all, was an xiucai scholar!'"
