Chan Master Gongchen of Mount Xiyu in Anjizhou ascended the hall and said, "Lingyun seeing blossoms was a cataract in his eyes; Xuansha stubbing his toe was adversity upon his body. It is better to pass the time just like this; naturally body and mind will be peaceful and joyful." Ascending the hall, [the master said], "Principle exists on account of phenomena; the mind arises pursuing objects. When phenomena and objects are both forgotten, there are a thousand mountains and myriad waters. How can one get it just right?" After a pause, he said, "Just do not gouge out healthy flesh to make a wound." The master authored the thirty-fascicle Zuyuan tongyao, which circulated in the world.
