Śramaṇa Huiquan of Liangzhou during the Sui had five hundred disciples. Among them, one was rather coarse and eccentric, whom Quan consistently refused to accept. Suddenly, this man claimed to have attained the fruit of ananāgāmin. Quan fell ill and closed his door; the man walked straight to his couch to inquire after his illness, while the door remained closed as before. The next day it happened again. He then said to Quan: “When Master passes away, you will be reborn in a brāhmaṇa family.” Quan said: “I have practiced seated meditation all my life; why should I be born there?” He replied: “Master’s faith in the Path is not yet deep, and secular studies have not yet been abandoned. Although you have meritorious karma, you cannot attain transcendence.”
