The country of Udyāna (the primary country of Northern India; formerly called Wuchang). Mountain valleys are contiguous, with a circumference of five thousand li. It was the former park of a cakravartin. The land is suited for saffron. It flanks the Subhavastu River. The royal city is fourteen to fifteen li in circumference. There are one thousand four hundred monasteries and eighteen thousand monks, all studying the Mahāyāna. Now many are desolate and few study the Mahāyāna. In their mastery of the texts and comprehension of the doctrine, their vinaya rules are handed down in five schools: first, the Dharmaguptaka; second, the Mahīśāsaka; third, the Kāśyapīya; fourth, the Sarvāstivāda; and fifth, the Mahāsāṃghika. There are over ten deva temples where tīrthikas live mingled together. The royal capital is the city of Maṅgala. Five li to its east, a great stūpa has many auspicious omens; this is where the Buddha, in the past as the ṛṣi Kṣāntivādin, was dismembered by King Kali. Two hundred and sixty li northeast of the city, entering the great mountains, one reaches the dragon pool of Apalāla, which is the source of the aforementioned river. Its stream flows southwest; it freezes over in spring and summer, with flying snow at morning and dusk. In the past, the Buddha converted this fierce dragon; Vajra[pāṇi] struck the cliff with his pestle, and the dragon, terrified, took refuge. It pleaded with the Buddha to allow it to send rain, which was granted, on condition that people first gather their harvest: it sends a flood once every twelve years. Over thirty li southwest of the pool, on a large stone on the northern bank of the water, the Buddha, having subdued the dragon, left his footprint, which appears longer or shorter according to one's mind. Following the stream for over thirty li, there is the Buddha's robe-washing stone, the pattern of the kāṣāya appearing as if carved. Over four hundred li south of the city, in the valley of Mount Hila, following the water upstream, one climbs eastward amid flowers and fruits clinging to the cliffs; at times, clamorous voices and musical sounds are heard, and square stones are linked together: this is where the Buddha, in the past, gave up his life upon hearing half a gāthā. Over two hundred li south of the city, beside a great mountain, is the Mahāvana Monastery. This is where the Buddha, in the past as King Sarvadā, having lost his kingdom and sought refuge, had himself bound and handed over for the sake of a poor man. Over forty li northwest of the monastery down the mountain, there is a monastery with a stūpa over a hundred feet high; beside it, on a square stone, the Buddha's footprint emits light illuminating the monastery, marking the spot where he expounded his past lives for the devas. Beneath the stūpa is a stone, yellowish-white and oily, where the Buddha, in the past, broke his bone to copy the scriptures for the sake of hearing the Dharma. Another seventy li to the west, a stūpa marks the place where the Buddha, in the past as King Śibi, cut his flesh to ransom a dove. Another two hundred li to the west, in the valley of Shaniluoja, the stūpa of the Sarpauṣadhi Monastery is eighty feet high; this is where the Buddha, in the past, manifesting as a large python in the body of Śakra, died to give his flesh to the impoverished and plague-stricken.
