the country of Kaśmīra (in North India, anciently called Jibin), seven thousand li in circumference, surrounded on all four sides by mountains. Although there are passes and trails, they are narrow and barely passable. The city overlooks a great river to the west; it is thirteen li long and about four li wide. There are over a hundred monasteries and more than five thousand monks. The land produces dragon-breed horses, saffron, and fire pearls. There are four stupas, each containing more than one sheng of relics. In the fourth century after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, the Venerable Pārśva only went forth at the age of eighty and realized the stage of non-learning. Leading five hundred arhats, he came here to compose one hundred thousand verses of Upadeśa to explain the Sūtrapiṭaka (Upadeśa-śāstra and Sūtrapiṭaka being alternate names), next composed one hundred thousand verses of the Vinaya-vibhāṣā-śāstra, and then composed one hundred thousand verses of the Abhidharma-śāstra, making altogether 6,600,000 words, fully explaining the Tripiṭaka. More than ten li southeast of the new city, at a monastery and stupa on the sunny side of the great mountain north of the old city, there are three hundred monks. The Buddha's tooth relic is an inch and a half long, yellowish-white, and emits light on fast days. Further south by fifteen li is a standing statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara; those who vow to see it will behold it if they fast. Over two hundred li northwest of the royal city, one reaches the Merchant Forest Monastery (Śāṅkāyana-vihāra).
