Further, passing two countries, climbing mountains and crossing an iron bridge toward the southeast for more than one thousand li, one reaches the country of Kaśmīra, belonging to North India. Within the country are four stupas, each containing more than a sheng of śarīra relics. In the four hundredth year after the Buddha's nirvāṇa, there was the Venerable Pārśva, who went forth into the homeless life only at the age of eighty and realized the fruit of an aśaikṣa. He brought five hundred arhats to this place and composed the Upadeśa-śāstra commenting on the Sūtra-piṭaka, followed by the Vinaya-vibhāṣā-śāstra, and then the Abhidharma-śāstra. These three treatises each contain one hundred thousand verses, totaling 6.6 million words, comprehensively interpreting the Tripiṭaka. There is also a tooth of the Buddha, one and a half inches long, yellowish-white in color, which emits light on fast days. There is also a standing statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara; whoever wishes to see it will behold it upon fasting.
