The above covers seventeen emperors of the Yuan Wei, ruling for one hundred and seventy years. There were forty-seven major state monasteries. At the northern terrace of Heng'an, stone was carved into niches stretching continuously for thirty li. There were eight hundred and thirty-nine monasteries built by princes and dukes, and more than thirty thousand monasteries built by the common people. In total, more than two million monks and nuns were ordained, and forty-nine works of scriptures were translated. The eastward transmission of Buddhism flourished most greatly here. Only in the reign of Emperor Taiwu, through trusting the flattering words of the Minister of Education Cui Hao, the orthodox teachings were suppressed and abandoned, lying hidden in obscurity for seven years. Later, realising their deceit and falsehood, he executed the Cui clan, restored Buddhism, and made it shine forth even brighter than before.
