The above constitutes the Yuan Wei's rule over seventeen emperors and 170 years: 47 major state temples; at Chang'an in the Northern Terrace, hewn stone grottos were constructed; thirty li to the east, there were 839 temples belonging to princes and dukes, and over 30,000 temples built by commoners; a total of over two million monks and nuns were ordained; and 49 works were translated. In the eastward spread of Buddhism, its prosperity reached its zenith here. Only in the time of Emperor Taiwu, through trusting the slanders of Minister over the Masses Cui Hao, was the true teaching suppressed and abolished, remaining hidden for seven years. Later, recognizing the deceit and slander, he executed the Cui clan, restored Buddhism, and illuminated it even more brilliantly than before.
