According to tradition, in the Sahā-lokadhātu during one great kalpa, a thousand buddhas appear in the world. Investigating the designation of kalpa, it cannot be deduced by ordinary reckoning of time. A square stone or a city of mustard seeds is provisionally taken as the measure of a period. Within it are contained four great intermediate kalpas, namely formation, duration, destruction, and voidness.
