As lifespan increases from ten years to eighty thousand, and again decreases from eighty thousand to ten years, undergoing twenty cycles constitutes one small kalpa. Twenty small kalpas constitute one kalpa of formation. Calculating by years, it spans eighty thousand ten-thousand billion, a hundred thousand eight million and eighty thousand years. Yet this is only one small kalpa. Now the kalpa of formation has already passed; entering the kalpa of duration, nine small kalpas have elapsed. The Tathāgata Śākyamuni is the fourth in the kalpa of duration; there still remain nine hundred and ninety-six buddhas who will arise in succession.
