Third reply: Defilements arise dependent on the mind; when the mind makes contact [with objects], defilements are formed. For one who constantly makes contact with defilements, the mind becomes daily darker; for one whose function is guided by the teaching, the mind becomes daily more subdued. When the subduing of defilements lasts long, one reaches the extinction of defilements. Yet the moment of extinction comes after the subduing of defilements. Subduing defilements and extinguishing defilements appear identical, but are substantially different; one must examine this. The substance of extinguishing defilements is where external things and the self are mutually forgotten, and existence and non-existence are viewed as one. The manifestation of subduing defilements is where other and self hold disparate feelings, and emptiness and reality are viewed as distinct. One who distinguishes reality from emptiness and differentiates the self from others enters into stagnation. One who unifies non-existence with existence and harmonizes self with things proceeds from illumination.
