26.59

制旨問法超等三律師曰。古人云。止沸莫若去薪。息過莫若無言。弟子無言乃復甚易。但欲成人之美使佛種相續與諸僧尼共弘法教。兼即事中亦不得默已。故今集會於大眾前。求律中意。聞諸。

The imperial inquiry asked the three Vinaya masters Fachao and the others, saying: 'The ancients said: to stop boiling, nothing is better than removing the firewood; to halt faults, nothing is better than silence. For me, silence would indeed be very easy, but I wish to bring out what is good in people, ensure the continuation of the Buddha-seed, and jointly propagate the teachings of the Dharma with all monks and nuns.
