26.61

制又問僧辯法師。復作若為開導。僧辯奉答。僧辯從來所解大意。亦不異法超。但教有深淺。階級引物。若論噉三種淨肉。理當是過。但教既未極。所以許其如此。

The imperial inquiry again asked Dharma Master Sengbian: 'How do you guide them?' Sengbian respectfully replied: 'The general meaning Sengbian has always understood is also no different from Fachao's. However, the teachings have depth and shallowness, guiding beings through progressive stages. If one discusses eating the three kinds of pure meat, in principle it must be an error; but because the teaching was not yet ultimate, it permitted them to do so.'
