26.62

制又問寶度法師。復若為開導。寶度奉答。愚短所解只是漸教。所以律文許噉三種淨肉。若涅槃究竟明於正理。不許食肉。若利根者。於三種淨肉教。即得悉不食解。若鈍根之人。方待後教。

The imperial inquiry again asked Dharma Master Baodu: 'How do you guide them?' Baodu respectfully replied: 'What my foolish and short-sighted understanding grasps is simply that this is a gradual teaching; therefore the vinaya text permits eating the three kinds of pure meat. If one reaches the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], it ultimately illuminates the correct principle and does not permit the eating of meat. Those of sharp faculties, upon hearing the teaching of the three kinds of pure meat, immediately understand that none should be eaten; while those of dull faculties await the later teaching.'
