The ear organ is dull and obtuse, producing many varieties of evil. Delighting in and stained by strings and songs, upon hearing the supreme Dharma and virtuous sounds it grows drowsy and wishes to sleep; but listening to the licentious and decadent tunes of Zheng and Wei, it straightens the body and inclines the ear. Knowing that those who take pleasure in supreme and virtuous matters are rare, while those who delight in licentious and decadent sounds are numerous, we vow to renounce this defiled ear and attain that divine hearing: hearing the sounds of the unlocking of stūpa doors, the calls of snapping fingers and clearing throats, retaining all that the Buddhas preach, the sounds of fragrant breezes in pure lands, and the ringing resonance of jeweled trees, attaining sudden awakening within a single thought.
