The faults of the nose organ are even more obstinate and crude. Addicted to and tainted by the six scents, lingering over the hundred blends; saffron is easy to cling to, while campaka is difficult to dismiss. Though perfume and stench are different, their harmonious nature is hard to dispel; in the air or on the sea, it remains wholly imperceptible. When the carved censer is there and azure mist sends forth smoke, consciousness and defilement pull at each other, increasingly giving rise to woven entanglements. Thus the centipede relishes the slug, deeming it fragrant; the crow craves the dead rat, having no doubt of its foulness. Now we vow to renounce this intermediate organ and attain that heavenly reception: shaking out our skirts and treading forward, striding across the distant groves of candana; carrying bags and wiping almsbowls, holding the jeweled rice of Gandhastin; forever departing from defilement and pollution, eternally maintaining pure elevation.
