舌根障重染惡尤深。毒刺爭興惡蛇競起。既貪五黃六禽之旨。又甘九鼎八珍之味。所以焚山破卵涸水枯鱗。黿臛不斟。有染指之過。羊羹不及。致入陣之苦。雖復鴝䴈鹿胃猶不稱甘。鳳肺龍胎更云不美。雖羅鼎俎未必皆當。在彼眾生於命已酷。或復間朋亂友破俗傷真。變紫奪朱反白為黑。所以讒言三至。曾母投杼。端木一說。越霸吳亡。故知三寸之舌未易可掉。駟馬既失於事難追。願斷煩惑入清淨境。既同阿難乞乳之譏。又等淨名寂默之致。餐禪悅之六味。欽善法之三德。形恭心到永趣菩提。

The tongue organ has heavy hindrances and is especially deeply stained with evil: venomous thorns compete to arise, and wicked serpents vie to emerge. Coveting the flavors of the five fowl and six beasts, relishing the tastes of the nine cauldrons and eight delicacies, it causes the burning of mountains, the crushing of eggs, the draining of waters, and the drying up of fish. Because the turtle soup was not served, there arose the transgression of dipping a finger; because the mutton broth did not reach him, it led to the bitterness of surrendering into battle. Though mynah birds and deer stomachs are still deemed unsweet, phoenix livers and dragon embryos are declared even more delicious. Though the tripods and platters are laid out, they are not necessarily fitting, while to those living beings, it has already been cruel to life. Furthermore, estranging companions and throwing friends into turmoil, disrupting the worldly and harming the true, changing purple to usurp vermilion, reversing white to make black. Thus slander, repeated three times, made Zengzi's mother drop her shuttle; a single speech by Duanmu made Yue hegemon and destroyed Wu. Hence we know the three-inch tongue cannot be lightly wagged; once the four-horse carriage is lost, the deed is difficult to recall. We vow to sever afflictions and delusion and enter the pure realm: matching both the reprimand of Ānanda begging for milk and the quietude of Vimalakīrti's silence; dining on the six flavors of the joy of dhyāna, revering the three virtues of the good Dharma, with reverent bodies and devoted hearts forever advancing toward bodhi.
