Because of ignorance and delusion, sentient beings mostly harbor jealousy and overweening pride. Therefore, seeing others practice good, they give rise to evil thoughts, destroying and breaking it down so that it cannot be accomplished. Yet those people before them do not necessarily suffer impairment of their practice, whereas the jealous vainly increase their feverish vexation, augmenting delusion and karma so that birth and death never cease. For this reason, the sages subdue the mind and control thoughts, practicing this rejoicing, and also encourage all sentient beings to practice according to the teachings.
