Di Shichang was a wealthy man during the Taikang era of the Jin. At that time Jin people were forbidden to become śramaṇas. Chang revered the Dharma and was not afraid of the penal nets. Secretly within his residence, he established a vihāra to make offerings to śramaṇas; Yu Falan was also among them. When bhikṣus came, he showed no reluctance. Later, a monk came whose appearance was hideous, his clothes tattered, and his feet covered in mud. Chang went out to salute him and ordered a slave to wash his feet. The monk said, 'Chang should wash them himself; what use is a slave?' Chang said, 'Being old and ill, I substitute the slave for myself.' The monk did not permit this. Chang cursed him privately and left. The monk then manifested an eight-foot form, majestic with light, and flew away through the air. Chang beat his breast and threw himself into the mud. Within the household, the monks, nuns, and fifty to sixty passers-by gazed up and saw him clearly dozens of zhang in the air. A rare and wondrous fragrance lingered in the residence for a month, so it is said.
