Yan Gongze was a man of Zhao, calm and carefree, diligent only in Dharma affairs. In the time of Emperor Wu of the Jin, he died in Luoyang. His comrades arranged a vegetarian feast for him at Baima Temple. That night, as they were chanting scriptures, a voice shouting 'Sādhu!' was heard in the air. Looking up, they saw a person of splendid form and bearing, who said, 'I am Yan Gongze. I have been born in the Western Realm of Peace and Joy, and have come here with all the superior persons to listen to the scriptures.' The whole hall rushed out in astonishment, and all saw him. At that time, Wei Shidu, an ascetic lay practitioner of Jijun, took Gongze's mother as his master; she was also deeply faithful and constantly fed monks. As midday approached, suddenly a bowl descended from the sky and fell right in front of the mother; it was indeed Gongze's bowl. Filled with rice, its fragrant aroma pervaded the hall. All were filled to satiety and did not hunger for seven days. Shidu had literary skill; this appears in the Mingxiang zhuan.
