In the early Eastern Jin, there was the father of Teng Bingshe of Nanyang. His household was faithful and reverent; whenever they held a gathering, they did not issue invitations beforehand, but made offerings to whoever came. Later, they held a gathering along the road to invite monks. Seeing a monk sitting in the shade of a willow tree, they invited him into the house to serve him food. The pure attendant overturned the rice, spilling the basket onto the ground, and was completely at a loss. The monk said, 'The poor monk's bowl of rice is sufficient.' When the needs of the whole assembly were met, he threw the bowl into the sky, and it vanished into the distance. Thereupon, they carved wood in his likeness, worshiping it morning and evening. Whenever a calamity was to occur, that image would first fall over, and so forth.
