Emperor Xiaoming of Zhou (personal name Yu) ruled over the ten thousand states, regulating and clarifying the hundred clans. Internally, he treated the nine branches of kin with affection; externally, he brought harmony to the four gates. He offered precious gems at Mount Tai and observed the tributes of jade and silks at Mount Tu. Down to the branch kin, pillars of state, feudal lords, and various officials, by means of the five dedications and ten practices, they all understood the way of taking refuge. Cultivating outer contemplation and inner awakening, they jointly ascended the gates of liberation. Worlds have an end, but vast vows are inexhaustible. In the second year, on behalf of the late Emperor, he reverently had a woven image of Vairocana made, along with two bodhisattvas, twenty-six feet in height; also twelve life-sized sandalwood images, each with two bodhisattvas as well as vajradharas, lions, and the like, reaching the peak of heavenly perfection and matching divine craft in beauty.
