蓋以隨其器而授其道也（論語。孟懿子即告眾人者。語孟武伯者以其人多可憂之事。語子游能養而或失於敬。語子夏能直義而或少溫潤之色。各因其材器之高下。於其所失而告之有不同。由是隨其器而授之其道也）。

This was because he conferred the Way according to their individual capacities (In the Analects, what he said to Meng Yizi addressed people in general; what he told Meng Wubo was because that person engaged in many worrisome matters; what he told Ziyou addressed being able to provide support yet perhaps lacking in respect; what he told Zixia addressed being upright and righteous yet perhaps lacking a mild and pleasant demeanor. Depending on whether their capacities and talents were high or low, he instructed them differently regarding their shortcomings; hence he conferred the Way according to their capacities).
