是時車匿舉聲大哭。白太子言。此馬雖是畜生。猶尚慈悲垂淚而泣。䠒跪出舌舐太子二足。況復眷屬當見何殃。爾時太子以手摩馬王揵陟。而有偈言。

At that time, Chandaka wept aloud and addressed the prince: "Although this horse is an animal, it still shows compassion, shedding tears and weeping, kneeling and putting out its tongue to lick the prince's two feet. How much more so the retinue—what calamity will they see!" At that time, the prince stroked Kaṇṭhaka, king of horses, with his hand, and there were verses, saying:
